What is Dance/Movement Therapy?

In VDMT’s practice, dance and movement offer a way to explore experience, emotion and connection. A session may combine conversation with attention to bodily sensation, gesture and movement.

The focus is not on performance or executing a dance correctly. VDMT is interested in what each person experiences and how they choose to express it within an intentional practice relationship.

Clarity helps you choose

Three different intentions.

01

Therapy

Discuss personal needs, therapeutic aims and fit with the practitioner.

02

Experiential learning

Explore movement, creativity and connection in a structured programme.

03

Education

Learn knowledge and skills within each course’s objectives, requirements and scope.

A little more clarity

Before you begin.

Do I need dance experience?

You do not need dance technique to begin exploring DMT. VDMT can explain the aims, participation requirements and preparation for each programme.

Should I choose therapy or a course?

For support with personal needs, start with a conversation about therapy. For learning or exploration, review the courses and their intended audiences.

Can I talk to VDMT before registering?

Yes. Email or call VDMT to discuss programmes, dates, fees and participation requirements before deciding.

Understanding before beginning.

Do I need dance experience?

No dance technique or performance experience is required. Movement begins with each person’s abilities and experience.

Is this a performance class?

The focus is awareness, expression and connection. Participants explore natural movement rather than reproducing a set dance.

Where is DMT practised?

In mental health, healthcare, education and community settings; formats include individual, couple, family and group work tailored to needs.
